Family, Friends, Saints, and Aints

Each year, Living Hope Christian Ministries organizes a short-term mission trip to serve the people of Nigeria, West Africa. Because of my love for God, I desire to serve Him by traveling to Nigeria again this year to assist in fulfilling the following mission and vision:

The mission is to:

  • present the Gospel to the lost
  • provide medical and optical care
  • prepare local pastors and leaders

The vision is to:

  • build clinics and pave roads to facilities
  • build churches, schools, and widows’ quarters
  • drill water wells

Last year I assisted with preparing locals for medical assessments and surgery. There were 25 of us from different parts of the country, including my Pastor and some of my church’s missions team. We traveled to a small village in Abia, the eastern part of Nigeria.

The village of Isukwauto is the home of about 50,000 people and the birthplace of the founder of Living Hope Ministries, Dr Acho, and his wife, who, besides COVID-19 years, have taken this trip every year for the past 30 years.

We worked alongside a small team of Nigerian medical professionals and volunteers. We served over 3,000 people and performed over 100 surgeries. Most of the tools and supplies used were what we bought with us.

Many natives traveled from afar and camped outside for days hoping to be seen by a doctor.

I didn’t know I would be doing the work of a physician assistant but that’s what it was; record-keeping, surgery coordinator, mama-sista-friend when that is what was called for, and prayer warrior. A trip like this will have you praying, for sure!🥰🙏🏾

I saw homes with no running water, babies with rickets, massive lymphomas and hernias, and two young moms with fungating breast cancer. I interacted with bright-eyed children who loved to read, and some who patiently sat ALL day waiting for their turn to have surgery. 😔❤️

Our days started at 6:30 AM and ended late into the night. We prayed and had fellowship every day. We laughed a lot, and some of us cried a little, too.

As I reflect

on how frustrating our health care system is here in America, how corrupt and imperfect the government is, the conditions of the poor, and the gun violence and drugs that infiltrate our streets, I nevertheless, see more than ever, how blessed we truly are. And, I also clearly see how much responsibility we have because of that blessing.💞

Special thanks to Mt Olive Baptist Church in Magnolia, New Jersey, for being such a huge sponsor of donations and prayers and for everyone who prayed for us before, during, and after we returned.😘
