I often hear people talk about personal development. There are many seminars and workshops that you can take both in person and on-line. I have attended events in person and on the web, and read books authored by some of the leading personal development leaders in the country. They include John Maxwell, Danny Johnson, Eric Lofholm, Tony Robbins, Eric Worre, T.D. Jakes, Joel Osteen, and Iyanla Vanzant, just to name a few.
They have all helped to educate me on personal development. However, I have found that the education is the precursor to personal development. Personal development is the application of what you learn. For years, my focus was on getting the knowledge, but the daily grind of applying what I learned remained inconsistent at best. Besides, I often felt like I already knew what they were sharing. I was hearing much of the same thing over and over, and blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah.
The personal development for most people, including me, is slow and steady. It is being consistent with the practice, doing a little each day. After being in fitness for over 16 years, I have become comfortable in that space, and see that I have only scratched the surface. There is so much more for me to learn. However, by spending each day learning something about being healthy, I have gained the respect of others for my discipline. That’s what it takes. It takes discipline and commitment to stick with it. Little by little, you turn the education into experience and hence personally develop.
