Chocolate is one of, if not the greatest sweet treats in the world.  But does it really have health benefits?

The answer is YES!

Cocao is the unroasted bean from the cacao tree that is made by cold-pressing it.  Cocoa looks exactly the same, but in this case, the cacao bean has been roasted at high temperatures.  The higher the content of cocoa in dark chocolate, the more beneficial.

Cocoa has antioxidants called flavanols.   There are studies that show the cocoa has more antioxidants than blueberries or acacia berry making it a super-food!  Antioxidants fight free radicals caused by oxidation, which is an underlining cause of all disease and a natural byproduct of aging.

Cocoa is high in fiber and minerals like iron, magnesium, potassium, fiber, and zinc.  Some of the benefits research suggests that consumption of dark chocolate may have are:

  • Nutrition properties
  • Immunity protection against free radicals
  • Lowers risk of heart disease
  • Enhances Mood
  • Increases energy
  • Raises good cholesterol
  • Reduces bad cholesterol

But weight!  There are some things to keep in mind when reaching for the decadent delight.  As mentioned, you must go with the chocolate that is higher in cocoa, which tends to make it taste more bitter.  Most dark chocolate contains some sugar, so look at ingredients.  Sugar should be the last ingredient or even better, not listed if the chocolate contains no sugar.  Spices are often used to help with flavoring healthy dark chocolate.  If it is organic, you will know the added spices are not processed.  Healthier chocolates will not contain milk products.

Lastly, keep in mind the caloric content of chocolate is relatively high, so eat sparingly.

Overall, this information is sweet, right?  Enjoy!!
