(Originally published in the World of Westchase, July 2025) There’s no shortage of sunshine here in Florida — and if you live in Westchase, you know July is one of our brightest months. It’s also UV Safety Month, a national health observance reminding us how important it is to protect our skin while enjoying time outside.
The sun is one of God’s greatest gifts — it helps our bodies produce vitamin D, supports healthy bones and immune function, lifts our mood, and helps regulate our sleep cycle. Sunlight can even reduce feelings of sadness or depression. In places with limited sunshine, people often experience seasonal mood shifts, lower energy, and disrupted sleep. So yes — the sun is good for you!
But more isn’t always better. Overexposure to UV rays can damage skin cells, speed up aging, and increase the risk of skin cancer — even for those of us with more melanin.
While darker skin does offer some natural protection from UV rays, it’s not full coverage. Skin cancers can still occur and are often diagnosed later in people with richly pigmented skin. That’s why sun protection matters for everyone, regardless of your background, culture, or complexion.
Tampa is home to people from all over — and no matter where you’re from, being mindful about sun exposure is part of staying well. If you’re moving outdoors, try to time your activity in the early morning or later evening, when the sun’s rays are less intense.
What you wear may depend on what you’re doing. Jogging or biking might call for lightweight moisture-wicking clothes and a breathable cap, while walking or gardening could be a great time to wear a wide-brimmed hat or UV-blocking sunglasses. Either way, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to exposed skin — and don’t forget to reapply if you’re sweating.
And of course, stay hydrated. Water supports your skin, your muscles, and your mental clarity — especially in Florida’s heat.
Let’s not let sunburn, fatigue, or heat illness steal the joy of summer movement. With the right awareness, we can enjoy the benefits of sunshine while keeping our bodies safe and strong.
The Florida sun is powerful — and so are you. Move with intention, protect your skin, and keep shining from the inside out.
